七、閱讀測驗題
1.
The manner in which nature has created the human body is incredible, such as the tears that lubricate our eyes and keep them healthy. Tears also play a role in our emotions and in reducing stress.
Tears are nature’s way of making us feel more comfortable. When our eyes are at discomfort because of some small particles in the air, when we are peeling onions, or when we are worn out and “red-eyed” because of overwork and staying up late, tears form in our eyes to clean and refresh them. Tears are also a sign of strong emotions. We cry when we are sad or happy. There is a biological basis for our sense that this emotional “release” is good for us. Tears help us to remove from our bodies certain chemicals, which build up in response to stress and create a chemical imbalance in the body. Crying can actually make us feel better because it corrects this imbalance. Biologically speaking, tears are actually drops of saline fluid produced by a gland in the body. Because salt is an important component, tears may actually serve as the most conclusive evidence that the human animal is the end product of a long evolutionary process that began in the sea. Indeed, tears seem to be uniquely human. We know that animals also experience emotions—fear, pleasure, and loneliness—but they do not shed tears. From this, we can conclude that tears are closely related to the emotional and biological makeup of the human species. Thus, both the emotional and the biological functions of tears make us even more “human” than we would otherwise be. ( ) Which of the following isn’t considered the function of tears? (A) They can help keep the eyes healthy. (B) They help us feel better when we are stressed. (C) They can be the source of inspiration for poets. (D) They help refresh our eyes after we have overworked. ‚ ( ) According to the article, which is the main reason why people should cry? (A) Crying is the best evidence of us being uniquely human. (B) Crying shows the difference between animals and humans. (C) Crying helps correct the chemical imbalance built up in human bodies. (D) Crying provides evidence that humans have gone through a long
evolutionary process.
ƒ ( ) Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the article? (A) People may become red-eyed because they stay up late. (B) A lack of tears may mean there are problems with our eyes. (C) Small particles in the air may bother our eyes and make us cry. (D) Harmful chemicals may build up in our bodies in response to stress. „ ( ) According to the article, which of the following is NOT true? (A) Tears are salty. (B) Human beings originated in the sea. (C) Both animals and humans experience emotional changes. (D) If a person has no tears, it is likely that they are not human.

Right now, several companies are developing a way to use your eyeball, especially your iris, as a kind of human ID card. Fingerprints, voice and facial recognition, and retinal images are all used today for identification, but they have limitations. What makes the iris, or colored part of the eye, so special is its stability for life. Also, the iris is difficult to change or fake, and is easily “read.”
Before using iris recognition technology, we take a picture of the iris with a video camera. It only takes a second, and we don’t need to worry if there are any glasses or contact lenses. Through a computer program, the iris’s forms are translated into a digital ID code, which is secret to anyone except the rightful person. This ID code can then be stored in a database, so a computer can quickly sort and search for matches. An ordinary home PC can search and compare about 10,000 iris IDs per second, meaning that you can be recognized out of the whole population of Taiwan in about three and a half minutes. Future uses for this technology can include banking, controlled entrance to business and apartment buildings, online shopping or law enforcement. You will just look at the scanner, and it will know exactly who you are. Then you won’t need to memorize pin numbers or carry cards anymore. ( ) What is this passage mainly about? (A) A new technology. (B) Our eyeball.
(C) A video camera. (D) Information technology.
‚( ) What does the word “read” in the first paragraph mean? (A) Digitalized. (B) Developed. (C) Recognized. (D) Searched. ƒ( ) Which part of the human body has not been used for identification? (A) The fingers. (B) The voice. (C) The eye. (D) The foot. „( ) Which is the advantage of using the digitalized iris ID? (A) It can be changed easily. (B) It is convenient and correct. (C) It can fully take the place of fingerprints. (D) It only takes a few seconds to sort and search for matches. …( ) What is the writer’s attitude to this new human ID card? (A) He welcomes the idea. (B) He is against the idea. (C) He will use this technology everywhere. (D) He hopes for a better recognition technology.
