L7 grammar

seem (動詞), 簡單的說分成四種用法：

1. 人+ seem + adj. -->ex. She seemed angry. (她似乎是生氣的。)

2. seem + like + 名詞 -->ex. The bread seems like a stone. (那個麵包看似一塊石頭。)

3. seem + to 原V ; seem not to + 原 V

-->ex1. He seems to be happy. (他似乎很快樂。)

-->ex2. He seems not to be happy. (他似乎不快樂。)

4. It seems that + 子句.

-->ex1. It seems that he is happy. (看樣子似乎他很快樂。)

-->ex2. It seems that he is not happy. (看樣子似乎他不快樂。)

despite 表「儘管；雖然」之意，為介系詞，其後須接名詞╱動名詞（片語），而非子句：
Despite + N / V-ing, S + V. = S + V + despite + N / V-ing.
Despite the tutor´s efforts to teach the student, she didn´t pass the test.
Despite growing up in an impoverished family, he never gave up pursuing his dreams.

※ despite 可用 in spite of 替換，語意用法相同：
Despite / In spite of her mistakes, we still support her.

although 或 though 亦表「雖然；儘管」之意，為連接詞，其後須接子句，而非名詞╱動名詞（片語）：
Although / Though + S1 + V1, S2 + V2. = S2 + V2 + although / though + S1 + V1.
Although / Though the singer´s new album was a big hit, most critics didn´t like it.

despite、in spite of 不可直接接子句，須在子句前加 the fact that，此時就相當於 although、though 的用法：
Despite / In spite of + the fact that + S1 + V1, S2 + V2. = Although / Though + S1 + V1, S2 + V2.
Despite / In spite of the fact that (= Although) he is marrying another woman, his old girlfriend still thinks he will come back to her.

despite、in spite of、although、though 不可和 but 同用於一句子：
Despite being 85 years old, but Grandfather still enjoys extreme sports.
= Although he is 85 years old, but Grandfather still enjoys extreme sports.
= Grandfather is 85 years old, but he still enjoys extreme sports.
